Site History
The Reason
I have been hooked on Harry Potter since my little sister forced me to watch the first movie. After I watched it I was so intrigued I went out and bought the whole set which was up to Goblet of Fire at the time. I finished them all in 4 days and was thirsty for more! I anxiously anticipated the release of the next book, and have since been enthralled with the books and movies.
The Beginning
I decided to make a HP site in January of 2006 after having my Buffy web site up for 2 years and having a sucessful a Ron/Hermione Myspace group up for a few months. The new site was finally ready to open in Feb. 2006 with the original address of http://loveunchained.tripod.com. It had a unique design and offered fanvideos, icons, and fanfiction. This site is still active as a homage to Love Unchained's humble begining, so if you wanna see how much this site has improved since it opened check it out.
The Upgrade
After a few months it became apparent that Tripod could not meet our needs in disk space nor bandwidth, so I purchased a domain name and 1 year of hosting from bluehost.com in May 2006 and began designing the new layout. I had no real experience in coding at that point as all my previous sites had been free sites and therefore I had used page builders. I had been making blends in 2003 but I didn't have very good software until I got my own computer when I moved out. The first layout wasn't very professional but it worked at the time. Later I discovered that you could ask professionals to make layouts for you and the real upgrade of the site began. I started using professinal layouts coded in php for easy updating and ditched my manually archived update posts for the user friendliness of the Cutenews content managment script. Soon I began to delve more into graphic design and made some skins for the fiction archive I had just installed (with the help of SteveD3) using the E fiction program. I also started a photo gallery with the Coppermine Gallery application that came with BlueHost's web service. Over time I've learnt how to code small things and I have gotten better at graphic design. Though I haven't progressed to making and coding my own layout yet I hope to learn soon.
The Revolution
When you are a fan of something you always hope that you can make an impact on your fandom and Love Unchained is starting to get there. The name Romione used in place of Heron for the Ron/Hermione pairing was started by me, MsBigBad. I hated the way Heron sounded so I decided to make up my own word and soon it caught on. Thus Love Unchained gained it's subtitle, A Romione Shipper's Paradise from the use of this new word. Not everyone uses Romione to describe the R/Hr relationship, but hopefully they will soon.
The Name
Love Unchained comes from a Billy Idol song of the same name. The song really has little to do with Ron and Hermione, but I liked the name and I love Billy Idol! Lyrics can be found below.
The Future
We have begun to grow and we hope to be the number one Ron and Hermione site on the net.
